The Armenian Canadian Medical Association of Ontario (ACMAO) is a multidisciplinary organization of health care professionals in Ontario, Canada, whose mission is to improve the health and well-being of the people of Ontario and Armenia through health education, humanitarian projects and academic endeavors.

Our upcoming Gala Fundraiser

The Gala Fundraiser of the Armenian Canadian Medical Association of Ontario will take place on September 11, 2010, at the Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex. For the map of the Liberty Grand Complex, click here.

Our Gala Fundraisers support our medical projects in Armenia and Karabakh. Our administrative spending is negligible. If you are interested, please, email acmaoexecutive@gmail.com to receive a copy of our 2009 Financial Statement. We also urge you to learn more about our many projects and humanitarian shipments.

We have great news to tell our supporters this year. We are establishing a state of the art MRI facility at Yerevan's best pediatric hospital, which will help in the diagnosis of many diseases. Currently available MRI machines in Armenia are of much lesser imaging quality. ACMAO is planning on obtaining a much more powerful MRI from one of Toronto's hospitals. The MRI is obtained for a negligible cost, and shipped to Armenia with the help of our sponsors, at no cost to ACMAO, or to doctors in Armenia, however annual maintenance fees are required, for which we need funds.

Corresponding to our theme, we are excited to welcome our guest speaker, Dr. Raymond Damadian, the inventor of MRI, who will speak about his career, and what a great help his invention will be for the pediatric and adult patients in Armenia.

Hand-in-Hand and the Smile Project

Hand-in-Hand NGO has been recently involved in the Smile Project, a private-public initiative that provides free reconstructive surgery to Armenian children and young adults with certain birth defects. The procedures were performed by a team of surgeons from Smile Network International (SNI), a nonprofit organization that provides reconstructive surgeries and related healthcare services to impoverished children and young adults in developing countries. Between October 4 and 10, the SNI surgical team operated on 50 patients from Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh suffering from congenital cleft lip and cleft palate. The team will perform additional surgeries in the Spring of 2009.

The Smile Project is a collaborative effort of the Cafesjian Family Foundation's Public Health Outreach Program, Hope for the City, Arabkir Medical Center, Fund for Armenian Relief, Hand in Hand Foundation (Nagorno-Karabakh), the Ministries of Health of the Republic of Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh, and Yerevan State Medical University.

The role of Hand-in-Hand has been the search and screening of patients with cleft lip and palate defects from all over Karabakh. Dr. Vahag Ghazaryan, the Medical Director of Hand-in-Hand, has led search and screen process.

ACMAO's newly established Foundation is working on organizing our next Gala Fundraiser at the Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex in Toronto on September 11, 2010.

ACMAO's next humanitarian shipment on the way
Our shipment of medical supplies and equipment to Armenia is on the way. This time, the shipment includes electroencephalography and electromyography machines, defibrillators, dental chairs and neonatal incubators (on behalf of Mrs. Sonia Nanig Artinian). Some medical supplies and books will also be included. The United Armenian Fund (UAF) will be providing tranportation from Toronto to Armenia.

Find a doctor in your neighbourhood

Visit http://www.cpso.on.ca/docsearch, choose "Accepting new patients", and either your city, or the three characters of your postal code, then "Submit". A number of physicians will show up. Try calling their offices and asking if they indeed accept most patients. The web site's information might be slightly outdated, but you must find at least one physician accepting a new patient.
